    Overview

Discover Traditional Basque Cider at Gartziategi

Located in Astigarraga, in the heart of Gipuzkoa’s cider country, Gartziategi is a traditional Basque cider house surrounded by its own apple orchards. Set above the Urumea valley, this historic farmhouse is known as one of the oldest active cider houses in the Basque Country, making it a special place to experience the roots of sagardoa culture.

During the guided visit, you’ll walk through the apple orchards beside the cider house and learn how local apples are transformed into natural Basque cider. Inside the cellar, you’ll see both modern production facilities and historic equipment, including an apple press that has existed for around 100 years.

One of the most fascinating parts of the tour is discovering how apples are washed and moved through the production process using the natural power of water and the slope of the land. This traditional method reflects the close relationship between Basque cider-making, nature, and the landscape.

The visit also includes the classic Txotx experience, where cider is poured directly from the barrel into your glass—a lively ritual loved by locals and visitors alike. Popular among local people, Gartziategi offers an authentic look into Basque cider culture, from orchard to cellar, and invites you to taste cider in the same way it has been enjoyed for generations.
